SAN DIEGO, CA — A 2-year-old boy suffered a broken pelvis and leg Wednesday when he ran in front of a pickup truck while his grandfather was moving it at a Kearny Mesa condominium complex.

The accident occurred at 2:13 p.m. at the Esplanade at Spectrum Center, San Diego Police Department Sgt. Michael Tansey said.

The 66-year-old man was moving his gray 2019 Dodge 1500 Series pickup truck under the guidance of his son, Tansey said.

The man first backed the truck up, then moved it forward without realizing his toddler grandson had run into the path of the vehicle, Tansey said.

The boy was struck and taken by paramedics to Rady Children’s Hospital for treatment of a fractured right pelvis and left the femur, Tansey said.

“The injuries are not considered life-threatening,” Tansey said.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed a factor in the incident, Tansey said.
